Project #12 (SmartBoard)

Blog Post #16 (Final Reflection)

Blog Post #5 Part 2

I, unfortunately, have not created a big PLN this semester. I am currently using Blogger as a way of expanding it by reading other blogs created by other teachers and also students from around the world. My PLN will help me expand my knowledge and learn more about what to do as a teacher. As I get closer to becoming a teacher, I will continue to add more resources and branch out and meet other educators.
EDM 310 has taught me what a PLN is, what I should use it for and how to use it as a future educator.

Blog Post #11

In the video, Back to the Future, Brian Crosby discusses his fourth grade class and the experiments that they do. His students do exciting and fun experiments and then post videos and pictures of them actually doing the experiment on their blogs. The students then noticed that they shared their classroom experiences with the whole world. Giving students assignments, projects and different activities that are interesting, exciting and fun will keep them focused on the lesson ans what they need to learn. Students being active learners will be motivated to better their knowledge.

In the video, Blended Learning Cycle, Paul Andersen goes into detail on what Blended Learning Cycle really is. The first part, Blended Learning, is taking the components of online, mobile and classroom learning and blending them together on the classroom. The last part, Learning Cycle, is composed of the 5 E's: Engaging question, Exploring the experiment, Explaining the phenomenon, Expanding, and Evaluating. Andersen made up an acronym that has six parts for his Blended Learning Cycle, called Quivers. It starts with a really good Question to begin the project with. Next, you wan the students to Investigate/Inquiry the experiment. Then, the students will have a Video to watch. Next is Elaboration, which is where the students will read more about it. The comes the one-on-one Review between the student and teacher. The teacher will ask the student questions about the assignment to understand if the student is ready for the Summary quiz.

The teacher that I commented on this week is Angela Maiers. The post that I commented on talks about a platform called Remind that allows faculty and staff to communicate with students and parents via their mobile devices. They have a new Chat feature that allows teacher to have a conversation with students and parents. The teacher can send out message reminders about school activities and a student or parent can immediately respond. The teachers can set limits on this feature, such as setting specific "office hours" during which they are available to talk.
My comment to this post said, "Hi Mrs. Maiers, My name is Kiyana and I attend the University of South Alabama taking the EDM 310 class. I really enjoyed reading your post about Remind. I have never heard of this program before. It sounds really interesting and sounds like a great way to better communicate with teachers, students and parents when they are not in school. I will be doing more research on this to learn more about it. Maybe in my future as a teacher I will use this program with my students."
Angela Maiers

This week I commented on the same teacher, Angela Maiers. The post I commented on talked about how she finds the courage to write. Before she writes, she says, " To find the courage to write, I have to constantly reassure myself that I am good enough, that my writing is WOW - Worthy of the World." She posted a video of when she visited a classroom and talked to them about writing so that it is WOW. She then talks about a student from that particular class who understood her lesson and is now writing works that are WOW.
My comment to this post said, "This post is very inspirational. I am not a writer and don't really like writing at all. But after reading this I think that I may start writing and see if my work will be WOW. You and Walter are my inspiration to writing."

Blog Post #10

In the video, First Graders in Ms. Cassidy's class, the students were using different types of technology and were very excited about it. They knew what they were doing and how to use it the correct way. With the blogs, they were very excited about getting comments from different people. The students knew how to make and use wikis, webpages, videos, and Skype.

The video interviews with Kathy Cassidy informed me on the good things that a class blog can do for the students and also the parents. A class blog will help the students with better communication and learning more about technology. It will keep the parents more informed on their child's progress throughout the school year, they will be able to visualize what their child is doing and learning in class everyday. One thing that could be a problem when trying to do a class blog is getting the consent from parents. There may be some parents who would not be willing to let there child's work be put on the internet. The way that I would handle that in my classroom is by just having those students write in journal during the time that other students would be writing their blogs. That way the student is still writing and the parent would still be able to see their child's progress, it just would not be exposed on the internet. With parents being concerned about their child's safety on the internet in class, as the teacher I would make sure that they know and understand that there are rules to follow when blogging and using the internet in class. I would definitely blog in my classroom as a future teacher.

What can Teachers and Students teach us about Project Based Learning?

The video Seven Essential for Project Based Learning discusses seven different things that should be done when doing a project. These seven essentials include:

  1. Need to know: teacher introduces the project with something interesting, such as a video, a field trip, a guest speaker, or a lively discussion, instead of just giving the students a stack of papers that will make them not want to do the project.
  2. Driving Question:students create a driving question that focuses on a specific area of the project topic.
  3. Student Voice and Choice: students choose how to design, create, and present their products.
  4. 21st Century Skills: students build and practice skills such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and the use of technology.
  5. Inquiry and Innovation: students created their own questions which leads to the search for answers which then leads to new questions, and testing ideas, and coming up with conclusions.
  6. Feedback and Revision: students critique each other's work using rubrics that they created.
  7. Publicly Presented Product: students present their projects to a public audience.
The video Project Based Learning for Teachers describes what Project Bases Learning really is and what it includes. This video helped me better understand what to expect or what I should do when doing project based learning. As a future educator I should know what PBL is and how it will help students.

The video What motivates students? includes different students who describe what motivates them to do good in school and what rewards that make them want to do better. One student said that he just like for teachers to simply complement him on his good work. A couple other students said that wanting to have a good job and better future is what motivates them to do good in school. Rewarding students on their good work makes the students want to do better in school.

The video and article Two students solve the problem of Watery Ketchup by designing a new cap is very interesting. I, along with many other people, do not like watery ketchup on anything. With the use of PBL, these to high school students were able to create something that will solve the watery ketchup solution.

In the article Ten sites supporting digital classroom collaboration in Project Based Learning, it introduces collaboration tools on the web that can be used in a Project Based Learning classroom. These sites include communication and collaboration with student to student, student to teacher, and student to expert. The ten sites include:

  • Titan Pad
  • Wall Wisher
  • Corkboardme
  • Google Docs
  • Microsoft Live
  • Today's Meet
  • Will You Type With Me
  • Linoit
  • Skype in Education
  • Quick Screen Share

C4K Summary for Month of March

C4K #5
The kid that I commented on is a seventh grader named Jesse. The post that I commented on, he talks about his basketball season. He says that he is on a traveling basketball team and they have had some good games and has also had some bad games. He says that whenever one of the players "gets there head down, then the rest of the team gets their head down." They have one more tournament game to play and they want to "end it with a bang."
The comment that I left for Jesse said "Every team has their ups and downs. You just have to stay positive, keep your heads up and continue to practice to get better. Whenever you see one player put their head down, remind them and the rest of the team that you guys did your best and there will always be another chance to do better at the next game. I hope that you and your team win the last tournament game. Good Luck."

C4K #6
This blog was from a sophomore named Kaylee. Her post was about her job shadowing experience. She says that she wasn't able to go with her first job choice, which is a forensic analyst, so she had to go with a pharmacist. She talks about how her experience wasn't very exciting, but it was interesting for her to watch them mix the medications in lotions and how they made chewable gummies.
The comment that I left for Kaylee said, "My name is Kiyana and I attend the University of South Alabama. I like how you were able to shadow one of your dream jobs. Even though the experience wasn't what you expected or that interesting, at least you were able to do it and know that being a pharmacist isn't what you really want to do. I wish that I was able to shadow my dream job when I was in high school. I hope you are able to make a final decision on what you really want to do in your future. Good Luck!"

C4K #7
This blog was from a seventh grader named JT. In his post he talked about football and that it is his favorite sport. He says that he plays lineman and has been playing football since he was in the fourth grade. He also describes a few of the different positions and what type of a person would play that position. For example, he says "You need fast people for running back, bigger guys for lineman, people who are fast and can catch for wide receiver, and people who can do everything and stay calm in intense situation should go out for quarterback."
The comment that I left for JT said, "My name is Kiyana and I attend the University of South Alabama. This post about football is very good. I like how you describe a few of the different positions. I'm not really a big football fan but I have learned a lot about it these past few years with the help of my boyfriend. He played football when he was in high school and has taught me some things so that I can better understand the game when I am watching it. I hope you continue to play and get better and maybe one day you will become a pro football player."

Project #9 Video Book Commentary

Blog Post #8

In Randy Pausch's Last Lecture video, he talked about his childhood dreams and how to enable the dreams of others. He is really a inspirational educator and this videos made me look at a few things differently. He is a very positive person even after being given the news about his health. In his video, he talks about following your dreams and not letting other people get in your way. As an educator, you want to be honest with your students and encourage them to dream big. He also says in his videos that you have to get the fundamentals down in order to be successful. Something that he said that I really liked is "When your screwing up and no one is saying anything to you no more, that means they gave up." It's really bad when someone gives up on, it makes you just want to give up on yourself. I will use that lesson towards my future as an educator. As an educator, in order to better teach your students you have find the strengths and weaknesses in each student. Learning the students strengths and weaknesses will help better understand how each student learns and what better suits them. You have to make learning fun by using different technology and project based learning.

This video has really encouraged me to follow my dreams and encourage other people to follow theirs.

C4K Summary for Month February

C4K#1
My first kids name was Lizzie H. from Mr. Boylen's eighth grade language arts class. The blog that I commented on was her talking about how she loves apple juice and always has to have a bottle next to her bed filled with apple juice every night. She wanted to know if anybody else does this. I told her that I do it all the time. When I was a kid I always had apple juice by my bed as well. Now, it doesn't have to be apple juice all the time. I have different kinds of juice by my bed every night.

This post was by Jesse B. who summarized the book Shiloh. He gave great detail about the book and described how the boy really felt about the dog Shiloh. I commented and told him that I had never read the book or seen the movie. His summary of this book has made me want to go actually read this book and then watch the movie.

Using iMovie and the Alabama Virtual Library in Kindergarten
In this video, Dr. Strange introduces Elizabeth Davis and Michele Bennett, who are both elementary educators. Mrs. Bennett discusses how kindergarten students are using iMovie to create and edit book trailers from books that they have read. She explains how the students get very excited about editing the videos to their liking.
Mrs. Davis talks about Alabama Virtual Library (AVL), which is completely free for students where they can go and do basic research on anything. Once they start their search, they are able to look at different images and encyclopedia articles that pertain to what they wanted to look up.

We All Become Learners
This video is about how using different devices changes the dynamics of learning. The teachers teach the students, the students teach the students, and the students teach the teachers. With using all the different types of technology everybody becomes a learner and a teacher in some sort of way.

iPads In The Classroom
In this video, it shows schools in Chicago that have started using iPads in the classroom. One of the teachers says that the iPads allow students to take virtual field trips everyday by searching web content that is user friendly for early childhood students. The use of these iPads keeps students engaged in lessons and materials.

Top 10 Reasons to Use Technology in Education
This video discusses the 10 reasons why technology is a great way in helping students learn.
These 10 reasons are:
1. Students Love It

C4T#1 Summary

The teachers blog that I commented on was Elvira Deyamport who is a Gifted Elementary teacher for grades 2-6.
Comment 1
The first post that I commented on was about a computer science program called Hour of Code. She talked about how she got her students to participate in this program and to explore the basics of coding. She describes how the tutorials for this program may seem like a game but is actually problem solving and logic. These tutorials use Angry Birds, Flappy Birds and characters from Frozen to better engage the kids in computer science.
The comment that I posted to that post said "I have never heard of the Hour of Code before reading your post. It sounds like an awesome program to learn more about computer science. I have never been the type of person to be interested in computer science, but after reading your post and then visiting the website, I think that I am going to try a tutorial and see how I really like it. This program sounds like a great way to get kids more interested in coding and learning how to better use computers."

Comment 2
The second post that I commented on was about how social media inspired a few writing prompts for her students. One example was the students had to pick an inanimate object or animal and write a letter giving advice to that object or animal. Another writing prompt, which is my favorite, is writing a scary story in five words. some examples are "The internet is down worldwide," "Imagine the world without pizza" and "There is no wifi here." These different styles of writing prompts encourage students to be more creative.
The comment that I posted said "I really enjoyed this post on how social media inspired the different styles of writing prompts that you assigned to your students. These writing assignments were very different and they let the students be creative in what they want to say. I will definitely be using these writing prompts in my classroom once I become a teacher."

What I learned from these conversations between Dr. Strange and Anthony Capps is that project based learning is a good way to have students interact and be involved in real world problems. It keeps students interested with things that are relevant to their lives and keeps them involved in their community. PBL is a different type of learning strategy that helps students have a better understanding of concepts, improves their communication and social skills, increases creativity, and also improves writing skills.
Project Based Learning

Another program that Dr. Strange and Anthony Capps talks about is iCurio. iCurio is an online tool that allows students to safely search websites that have been filtered for educational uses. It is directed more towards students and has a storage capacity so that they can stay organized with all of the audio, text and video that they search.

PLNs, or Personal Learning Networks, are sets of people, places, tools, and activities which you call upon for help, consultation and collaboration and it enables you to learn. They were originally for just family and friends, and maybe some people you with worked with, but it has evolved since the internet has upgraded.
As a teacher, a PLN can help me:

  • Get help and learn from professional specialists
  • Get lesson plan ideas from experienced teachers
  • Provides more opportunities for teachers to learn
  • Helps you stay connected with other educators
  • Keeps teachers up to date with the changes in the classroom
In order to create your own PLN, you have to invest time to find and connect with people you trust who you also share interests and passions with. The growth of your PLN is also determined by your eagerness to reach out and connect with new people, professionals and your mentors, who would be the individuals who you highly respect and will help you grow.
Once I create my PLN, I plan on keeping in touch with my group members and many of my peers. I will also use Facebook and Twitter to help build up my PLN.

What do we need to know about asking questions to be an effective teacher?
While reading the first article by Ben Johnson, I started realizing that my teachers always asked that one question, "Does everybody understand?" Sometimes after that question was asked, I really did not understand, but I was one of those students who would not speak up and say that I didn't or even ask more questions about the subject to better understand.
The strategies that are mentioned in the article, "Asking Questions to Improve Learning," sound like effective strategies that would get the students to answer more questions, better understand the material and also to participate more in the classroom. The strategy that I particularly like is to ask a mix of different questions. These questions should be closed, managerial and open questions. Closed questions have a limited number of correct answers that test students' comprehension of important information. Managerial questions ensure that the students better understand an assignment. Open questions have multiple answers and is the most effective in encouraging discussion in the classroom.
Some other strategies to know about asking questions in the classroom is to ask specific questions, do not ask more than one question at once, unless it is a yes-or-no question which you can follow with an additional question, and also include notes with your questions. As future teachers we need to know that we do not know everything and there is no reason for us to assume that the students know nothing.

Before watching these videos, I knew what peer editing was but I didn't know how to approach it and what to say while peer editing. These videos taught me a lot about how to better peer edit and what to look for.
Peer Editing is working with someone you own age, usually in your own class, to help improve, revise, and edit his/her writing. In order to better approach Peer Editing you need to follow three easy steps: Compliments, Suggestions and Corrections.
Step 1 Compliments: Always start with telling the writer what he/she did well.
Step 2 Suggestions: Give the writer specific ideas about how to make their writing better.
Step 3 Corrections: Check the author's writing for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
These three steps is what I will use to peer edit my classmates in EDM 310. I will always stay positive and be specific when I comment on my peers posts, which is also the importance of peer editing. You always want to make sure that you stay positive and be specific while peer editing.

Blog Post #2

1. The central message of this video is that you can't expect your students to learn by just teaching from a PowerPoint or any form of just writing notes. In this video, the class was a dancing class which is hands on and the students should have been taught by demonstration then having them actually do the dance steps in class. The author makes it very clear that by the students just showing up for class and not being able to participate in actually doing the dance steps then they are not learning what the teacher is suppose to be teaching. His conclusion showed that none of the students learned anything in the class by just taking notes. I agree with his conclusion because I am a very hands on person and would have liked to physically do the steps to better learn what they are and how to do them.

2. In this video, Roberts is basically saying that teaching in the 21st Century is being taken over by the internet and the different forms of electronics. The teachers are not the main source of knowledge any more.

  • Technology is the main source of knowledge.
  • Students in the 21st century should be able to remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create.
  • Use different tools and technology to get the students more involved and interested in learning.
Roberts sees teaching as being taken over by technology and electronics. I think he is correct, but I don't think it will affect me negatively as a future educator. If I can use technology in a good way by teaching my students to use it for learning and networking and connecting with other students on what they are learning then it will get them more engaged and more interested in the classroom.

3. The student described in this video is so good at networking because he was taught by his teacher on how to be prepared and build his network. His teacher helps him throughout his process and overs him guidance on anything and everything. If he didn't have a teacher like her willing to help him with his networking, then he most likely wouldn't be networking or wouldn't have any idea on how to start and keep up with it. His teacher is the reason for him being successful in his networking.
Networking Student

4.The thesis of Davis' video is that technology is a good form of teaching for students who already use technology on a daily basis. She is also teaching her students how to use technology in different ways other than for social media. Her way of getting her students to use technology to better communicate with other students around the world is an excellent idea. I wish that I would have had a teacher or anything when I was in high school that could have taught me how to better use technology in a way to communicate and collaborate with other students around the world.

5. I learned a lot while watching "Who's Ahead in the Learning Race?" Before watching this video, I really thought that the Graduate Students were ahead, but now I can see that the Elementary Students are really the ones who are ahead of everybody. Watching them being able to use Mac computers after just having them for a couple of days really impressed me. I don't even have a Mac computer and I'm still learning how to do different things on it. I am currently a Undergraduate Student and haven't learned how to do half as much as those Elementary Students have.

6. I love the idea of "Flipping the Classroom." It gives students the opportunity to learn better and be more prepared for the lessons on the upcoming school day. I had never heard of this idea before watching this video. This is a brilliant idea that I would definitely use as a teacher. It will allow me to teach my students more and be more creative in the classroom. I also feel as though I am not going to be one of those teachers who likes to just stand in front of the classroom and lecture all day. I like to be engaged in activities and flipping the classroom will provide me with interacting with my students more and having fun in the classroom all the while still learning the material.

Blog Post #1

Before taking this class, I hadn't really heard much about it. The one thing that I do remember somebody telling me about this class is to make sure that I do ALL of my blog posts every week before Sunday. Having to do a blog post every week is one of the fears I have about EDM310. Another fear is being able to write the right things and answer all questions effectively in the blog post. In other classes similar to this one, I could just write something short and to the point and then be do. But with this class, I have to make sure that I write a good and quality blog post and go in depth with the posts and answers and that will be one of the most difficult things for me to do in EDM310. For me to address this aspect, I will need to research and read more about writing a good and quality blog post and what will help me in writing more in depth posts.

Outline

  • I will begin by telling you who I am and where I from.
  • Next, I will tell you why I want to become an educator and what an educator is required to do in his or her work.
  • Lastly, I will tell what I like to do and what my passions are and other interesting facts about myself.

My name is Kiyana Anderson and I am from Pensacola, Florida, which is only about an hour south of Mobile. I starting attending USA in August 2013 after I transferred from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida. I came here to major in Nursing and become a neonatal nurse, but unfortunately I didn't do good in some of my classes that were required to be accepted in the nursing program here. So, I decided to major in Elementary Education, that way I can still be around kids who are a passion of mine. Teachers in the 21st century are dedicated to working and teaching children. Their work entails them to teach there students and provide them with the best knowledge.

What I like to do more than other things is learn and tech myself how to sew. I work at a fabric store and have started liking the idea of making my own things, such as clothes, blankets, curtains, and many other things. So, I got my first sewing machine for Christmas and have been teaching myself how to sew and learning how to use a sewing machine. I also would like to get better at being more talkative and getting to know new people.
